Red Squirrels

Wondering about those red squirrels spotted across New Jersey? To be sure, red squirrels are a separate species from the more common gray squirrel.

These little guys are more or less reddish in the body, with a distinctive red tail. They’re also noticeably smaller than gray squirrels.

American red squirrels are not endangered. The Eurasian red squirrel — common in Europe and Russia — is endangered. In New Jersey, we’re dealing with a separate species with a very stable population.

If red squirrels are invading your property or causing a nuisance, you can call for squirrel removal by pest control professionals. Don’t worry — you aren’t messing with a threatened species!

Other key facts about about American red squirrels:

  • They prefer to eat pine cone seeds, but they will eat other plants, too.
  • They are extremely territorial. A family of red squirrels will fiercely defend their land from other squirrels.
  • Most red squirrels die before their first birthday. The ones who do live typically live for about two and a half years, or up to eight years.
  • Mothers make several squirrel nests in close distance and alternate between them.

Red squirrels have much of the same (annoying) habits as any other squirrel. Want them out of your house and off your property? Talk to us at Heritage Pest Control about removing red squirrels and blocking them out of your house.
